How to Read a Japanese Auction Sheet Before Buying

A Japanese auction sheet is a standardised condition report produced by an auction house inspector at the point the vehicle was sold at a Japanese export auction. It typically records an overall condition grade, separate interior and exterior letter grades, an odometer reading, and a diagram noting visible defects on the body.

It is an independent snapshot from the time of that specific auction — not a guarantee of the vehicle's current condition after shipping, storage and any work done since import. Treat it as strong supporting evidence, not the final word.

Auction houses commonly grade vehicles on a numeric scale such as S or 6 (under roughly one year old, as-new condition), 5 (very high condition with minor imperfections), 4.5 (high condition with slight bodywork imperfections and typically higher mileage than a 5), and 4 and below indicating progressively more visible wear such as small scratches and dents.

“R” generally denotes a vehicle with a repair history or notable prior damage, and “RA” typically denotes a vehicle that had a minor accident but was fully repaired. Grading scales and exact definitions can vary slightly between auction houses, so treat the letter or number as a strong signal, not an exact universal standard.

Alongside the overall grade, most sheets carry separate interior and exterior condition letters, commonly A through E — A representing near-new condition and lower letters indicating more wear, staining, odours or damage. A high overall numeric grade paired with a poor interior letter grade tells a different story than the headline number alone.

The diagram on most sheets uses simple symbols or letters positioned on a vehicle outline to flag specific defects — scratches, dents, rust or repainted panels — at their approximate location. Cross-check any flagged panel against the physical vehicle rather than assuming the defect was minor or has already been addressed.

The recorded mileage and odometer reading should also be checked against the vehicle's current odometer and any other documentation you can obtain. A significant unexplained gap is a reason to ask direct questions, not to proceed and hope it resolves itself.

Ask the seller or importer for the original auction sheet for the specific vehicle, not a generic example or a sheet for a similar unit. Match the chassis number, auction date and stated mileage on the sheet against the vehicle and its Pakistani registration and import documents.

Because the sheet reflects condition at export, always pair it with your own independent inspection covering the current mechanical condition, any repair work carried out after import, and Pakistan-specific registration and duty-payment status.
